Create & Restore

Everything you need to know about creating a new wallet and restoring it with your recovery phrase.

Full documentation
How do I create a new wallet?+

After installing and launching Cosanta Wallet, choose “Create a new wallet”. The app generates a unique 12 or 24-word recovery phrase on your device. Write it down on paper in the exact order shown, confirm it, and set a strong password. Your wallet is now ready to receive and send COSA.

What is a recovery phrase and why is it so important?+

The recovery phrase (also called seed phrase) is the master key to your wallet. It contains all the information needed to regenerate your private keys and access your COSA from anywhere. Anyone who has it controls your funds; anyone who loses it cannot be recovered by anyone — including the Cosanta team. Store it offline, on paper, in a secure location.

How do I restore my wallet on a new computer?+

Install Cosanta Wallet on the new device, then choose “Restore wallet” instead of “Create new” on the welcome screen. Enter your recovery phrase word by word in the exact original order, set a new password, and the wallet will resync with the network. All your addresses and balances reappear once the sync completes.

Can I restore my wallet if I only have the password?+

No. The password only encrypts and unlocks the wallet on the device where it was created. The recovery phrase is the only way to restore access on a new device or after a disk failure. This is the nature of a non-custodial wallet: only you hold the keys.

Can I use the same wallet on multiple devices?+

Yes. Restore the same recovery phrase on each device. Keep in mind that all devices will show the same addresses and balances, so use them as views of one wallet. For separate funds, create a separate wallet with its own recovery phrase.

I lost my recovery phrase. What can I do?+

If the wallet is still installed and unlocked on your current device, open Settings and view or re-export your recovery phrase (you will need your password). If the phrase is lost and the device is gone, the funds cannot be recovered. This is why backing up the phrase immediately after creating the wallet is essential.

Is it safe to keep my recovery phrase as a photo or in the cloud?+

No. Photos, cloud notes and password managers with cloud sync can be compromised. Write the phrase on paper — or engrave it on metal for long-term storage — and keep it somewhere physically secure. Never type it into any website, and never share it with support agents.
